From the (new) EditorThis issue of the CHP Corner marks a change in Editors. For the past several years, Gary Kephart has served as the Editor in Chief of the CHP Corner and CHP News. Steve Rima has served as the Associate Editor. This means that for the past several years, Gary has done most of the work associated with gathering information and putting the CHP Corner and CHP News together and Steve has helped do whatever Gary wanted him to do. In reality, Gary has carried most of the load for the past three years and has done an excellent job. With this issue, Steve is taking over as the Editor and Gary will continue to serve as the Associate Editor to help with the transition. In the near future, it is hoped that another CHP will step forward and volunteer to help with this process. The intent is to find a volunteer to fill the Associate Editor position to assist Steve for two to three years and then take over as the Editor. This process affords someone the opportunity to get involved and contribute to the Academy. The June CHP News contains details about this topic. Please remember that the CHP Corner and CHP News belong to you. If you have any input in the form of articles, cartoons, letters to the editors, etc., that you would like included, send it to one of us. Well help with editing and formatting if you get the information to us. We receive very little in the way of contributions from members of the Academy and would very much like to include your thoughts and input in future issues.Steve Rima Not-Parting ShotsWhile Steve is picking up the reins of the editorial role, I have committed to stay around and help get another editor started in the pipeline. Having conducted the Academy membership opinion survey last year, some work also remains to help the Executive Committee and other standing committees understand and address the valued and valuable feedback. Additionally, President Chuck Roessler has challenged us to work together with Scott Webmaster Medling to evolve the Academys communications into a more optimum balance between printed and electronic media. In short, there is much to do and its time I did something different. I have enjoyed my time as editor and I look forward to working with the next volunteer!Gary Kephart VERIFY CERTIFICATIONA REMINDER!Attainment of American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) Certification is increasingly viewed as a required or desired credential for the assignment of some radiation-protection responsibilities. As the value of certification increases, so too does the potential of fraudulent claims of CHP status. The American Academy of Health Physics (AAHP) and ABHP encourage licensing/regulatory agencies, employers, and contract officers to verify the certification status of potential or current employ ees or contractors. In addition, the AAHP and ABHP encourage anyone contemplating securing the services of a health physicist who claims to be certified by the ABHP to verify the certification status of the applicant. Verification can be performed by consulting the list of Active Certified Health Physicists in the Radiation Safety Professionals Membership Handbook and Directory (the HPS membership handbook) or on the AAHP Web site at: http://www.hps1.org/aahp/members/members.htm Awards of Certification or reactivations of Certification that are too recent to appear on these lists may be verified by contacting Nancy Johnson, Program Director, at the AAHP Secretariat at 703- 790-1745.· |
