AAHP Nominating Committee Activities
Jerry Martin, CHP, Chair |
The Committee recently completed the nominating process
for the next election of American Academy of Health Physics (AAHP)
officers. Candidates are for President-elect, Tom Buhl and Dan Strom;
for Treasurer, Ken Eger and Gary Kephart; and for Director, Regis
Greenwood and Brian Methe. Academy members will be receiving ballots
soondon't forget to vote!
The
Committee also recently submitted recommended nominees to the Selection
Committee for the Joyce P. Davis Memorial Award.
The
Committee is currently considering nominees for an American Board of
Health Physics (ABHP) replacement member for the 2003-2007 term. Any
Academy member who is interested in serving on the ABHP should contact
one of the following Nominating Committee members: Ed Bailey, Tom
Crites, Bob Feinberg, Steve Gebers, Dave Kent, Joel Lubenau, Larry
McKay, or Jonafred Thomas.Robert Miltenberger, CHP

Accreditation of the ABHP by the Council of Engineering and
Scientific Specialty Boards
Robert Miltenberger, CHP
Several years ago the ABHP, acting in response to
the AAHP's long-range plan, made application for accreditation by the
Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB).
Accreditation by the CESB brings the ABHP in line with other Specialty
Boards that issue certifications such as those of the Certified Safety
Professional (CSP) and the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). At its
February 2001 meeting, the CESB unanimously approved our application for
accreditation. The accreditation is valid through 2004.
Renewal
of accreditation is conditional on two changes to the current ABHP
policy and procedures:
- Adding a board member to represent the public interest.
- Changing the procedure for selection of Board members such that
no more than one-third of the members are chosen by the Academy.
(Note: We believe that the CESB Policy states that no more than
one-third of the members may be chosen by the Board. This would not
preclude the members being selected by the Academy.)
In
July of 2001, the ABHP petitioned the CESB to examine in detail the
current ABHP Board selection mechanism because we believe that, since
the Academy selects the members of the Board, we already comply with the
CESB accreditation standards. The CESB is reviewing that matter and will
decide the issue at a future meeting.
The
CESB also made a recommendation to shorten the time between the
examination date and reporting of candidate results. The requirements
for accreditation renewal and the recommendation are topics that were
discussed at this summer's Board and Academy meetings. The Board
believes that a possible reengineered Part II exam, which is currently
being developed, will allow the Board to provide results of the exam in
a more timely fashion.
The
addition of a public interest member to the Board is a reasonably easy
modification, one that members of other Boards have informed us has
added greatly to their programs.
The
issue of Board member nomination and selection is a sensitive one. It is
hoped the CESB will agree with the Board's interpretation of the CESB
accreditation standards and determine that our existing process is
adequate. |
